Report Says Apple to Launch 7-inch IPad by Christmas

Posted by Ken Ng on 3:55 AM 0 comments

PCWorld is reporting that Apple may release a new iPad in December. According to the report, Apple is tinkering with a new tablet that sports a 7-inch touchscreen (a mini-iPad, so to speak) and may roll out before the end of 2010. The source of the report is the Economic Daily News, major Chinese-language Taiwanese newspaper. This news comes on the heels of a source code discovery deep within iOS 4 that not only references a CDMA iPhone but also the next iPad.

It should be mentioned, however, that this is the publication that first reported the iPad's definitive existence while many others still regarded the "Apple tablet" to be a mythical device that would likely not manifest any time soon. With some degree of credibility in tact, the publication follows last week's Digitimes report indicating that Taiwanese companies have already begun assembling the forthcoming 7-inch iPad.

The Economic Daily piece references a number of Taiwanese companies that have secured "component contracts" for the device presently - and unofficially dubbed - iPad 2. Chimei Innolux will supply 7-inch LCD screens, notes the report, which utilizes the same in-plane switching technology of the first generation iPad. Meanwhile, touchscreen technology for the screens will be from Cando Corporation. Compal Electronics will assemble the new, smaller iPads.

The iPad was on sales on April 3rd in the States and now they are going to launch a new iPad by Christmas? And only 7-inch. Hmm. What is Apple thinking now? Name for it? Called by some the iPad 2.

Not only will the 7-inch iPad be cheaper than the 10-inch model, but it could also be a great competitor to the plethora of tablets scheduled to hit stores later this year or early in 2011: the BlackBerry BlackPad, the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the Asus Eee Pad or the Motorola Stingray.

Never miss your bus again with SG Buses

Posted by Ken Ng on 2:06 AM 0 comments

I bet this is the most wanted application in AppStore in Singapore. I would recommend all of you iPhone user to install this app if you have not done so.

Early in the morning before going to work, first thing first, I'll check what's the next bus arrival time. 10mins? 15mins? I can save alot of time by eating slowly, making sure I took all my stuff and e.g

Try it. You'll love it!

Go to AppStore and search for SG Buses. Install and you're done!

SG Buses is a bus guide for Singapore iPhone/iPod Touch users. SG Buses contains information on:
- bus routes
- schedules of first and last buses
- bus stop numbers (for use with IRIS)
- bus arrival time of SBS and certain SMRT buses

With SG Buses, you can browse or search for information of a particular bus, or search for all the buses available at a particular bus stop or road.

Note.
SG Buses is performing poorly with older iPhones like iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS when running iOS4. An optimized version will be coming soon in 2.6

What's new

Updated to support OS3.0 to iOS4.x

iPhone 4 antenna issue in Singapore

Posted by Ken Ng on 1:29 AM 0 comments

I have received many comments, feedbacks, emails, reading from other site and watching video regarding iPhone antenna issue in Singapore.

Most of them don't have a drop call at all. Singapore is a small country, we're not a big country like the States. They might get 3 to 4 bars signal which is not surprising at all but why are we still getting low signal? Only iPhone 4? I get low signal on my 3GS after updating to iOS 4.01(read more about it here)

I do think that it's not really a big deal. Just put a case and you're done. I mean who doesnt want to protect your iPhone!

Anyway, not every iPhone 4 has the antenna problem. Some kind of bad quality control there. If you got the unlucky one, attaching Apple rubber bumper accessory would solve the problem.

Also,  the guys at CNET Asia tested the iPhone 4 in Singapore StarHub SIM card and found that they could get the bars to drop indoors but not outdoors. They also have a video here.

Do you have antenna issue on your iPhone 4? What do you think? Apple knew this before they launch the iPhone 4.

Apple delays white iPhone 4 again

Posted by Ken Ng on 1:09 AM 0 comments

Apple announced that it still has had difficulty in manufacturing the white version of its iPhone 4, and the product will not be available until "later this year."

"White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected, and as a result they will not be available until later this year," the company said in a statement on Friday. "The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected."

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs publicly said that the white iPhone 4 remained on track to launch by the end of July. Jobs made his comments at last week's iPhone 4 press conference, at which it revealed it will give away free protective cases for every iPhone 4 purchase through Sept. 30.

In June, Apple said in a press release that the white iPhone 4 has "proven more challenging to manufacture than expected." At the time, the company expected to launch the white handset in late July. The white model has not been available for sale anywhere since the iPhone 4 launched

Apple's alleged difficulties in having glass panels for the iPhone 4 manufactured was detailed in a report that claimed one machine from a supplier can only make three panels per hour. A worker with Chinese manufacturer Lens Technology reportedly said that the company is still trying to work out the right balance of paint thickness and opacity with the white iPhone 4.

It was claimed that the manufacturer has had difficulty in ensuring the panel allows enough space for the digitizer overlay while also providing the level of white that Apple expects the glass to have.

Do you prefer the white iPhone 4 or the black? I prefer the black iPhone 4. Classic

JailbreakMe Puts Your iPhone At Risk.

Posted by Ken Ng on 11:35 AM 0 comments

JailbreakMe.com by comex is one of the easiest and quickest jailbreaks. However, it is also one of those jailbreaks that really puts your iPhone at risk.

The way JailbreakMe works is that it takes advantage of a vulnerability in iOS, and more specifically the fact that iOS downloads PDF documents automatically. Comex managed to inject the jailbreak code in a PDF document that is downloaded and executed once you “slide to jailbreak” on JailbreakMe.com.

Now that this very simple exploit has been revealed, there are chances some bad guys out there might want to take advantage of it and potentially steal data from your iPhone. Before you start panicking and running around the house screaming, let’s be clear that the chances of this happening are actually very thin, but you never know.

Saurik Patches PDF Security Holes, Fixes What Apple Can't

Posted by Ken Ng on 11:15 AM 0 comments

On Wednesday 11 Aug 2010, Apple (finally) released firmware 4.0.2, which patches the very large security holes exploited by @comex in the 2nd incarnation of JailbreakMe.com and end the short lived JailbreakMe.com method to jailbreaking.

However, in the process, Apple decided to neglect devices such as the iPhone2G and iPod Touch 1G for this update. The only problem is they outright abandoned iPhone2G and iPod Touch 1G users!

Even though Apple acknowledges in their security update the severity of these holes, they left iPhone2G and ipt1G owners high and dry — completely vulnerable to truly malicious variants of jailbreakme (these variants aren’t out yet, but they’re sure to come!).

Luckily for Apple, the Jailbreak community isn’t so callous. @saurik has been burning the midnight oil coding a Cydia package that will fix the holes for all devices and all firmware versions (even going back to version 2.x!).

Since the only reason for 4.0.2 was to fix the security holes, and since the upcoming Cydia package will fix them too (and then some!), everybody should sit tight on 4.0.1 (or lower) and install the Cydia package as soon as it’s out.

I strongly recommend all jailbreaker to install this PDF patch if you are using JailbreakMe.com method.

And please stay at 4.0.1 until new update for jailbreak.
